After an Accident

What To Do After an Accident

General guidance on the claims process, and how to reach us if you need help finding coverage.

The Process

How to file a claim

  1. Make sure everyone is safe

Move to a safe location if possible, check for injuries, and call 911 if anyone needs medical attention.

  2. Document the scene

Take photos of all vehicles, damage, license plates, and the surrounding area. Get contact and insurance info from other drivers and witnesses.

  3. File a police report

Most states require a police report for accidents involving injury or significant damage. Request a copy of the report number.

  4. Report your claim to your carrier

Contact your insurance carrier or agent directly to start your claim. Have your policy number, the police report number, and your photos ready.

  5. Meet your claims adjuster

Your carrier's adjuster will review the damage, explain your coverage, and walk you through repair options and next steps.

  6. Get back on the road

Once your claim is approved, your carrier will coordinate repairs or reimbursement and, if applicable, a rental vehicle.

Claims FAQs

How long do I have to file a claim?

We recommend filing as soon as possible — most states require notice within a reasonable time, and evidence is freshest right after an accident. Check with your carrier for their specific deadline.

Will filing a claim raise my premium?

It depends on fault and your policy's accident-forgiveness terms. Your carrier or agent can walk you through the specifics of your policy.

Does my policy cover a rental car while mine is repaired?

Rental reimbursement depends on the coverage you selected. Check your policy documents or ask your agent.
